Full history

7,016 trading days from 1998-01-30 to 2026-07-21, recomputed with the same formula throughout. Because the history is backfilled across the entire available price record rather than starting the day the index launched, today's reading can be compared directly against past cycles.

Reading bands

Extreme greed (75 and above)
Prices well above trend while volatility is low. The 2007 advance and early 2021 both sat here.
Greed (55 – 75)
Above trend but not at an extreme — the most common state during an advance.
Neutral (45 – 55)
The three inputs offset one another. The index says little about direction here.
Fear (25 – 45)
Prices have slipped below trend, or volatility has risen above its recent norm. Common during corrections.
Extreme fear (Below 25)
Drawdown and volatility at extremes together — October 2008 and March 2020 both sat here. This band has appeared near lows, but it can also stay low throughout a continuing decline.
